Cash Bar Option
Sometimes known as the Cash or Pay Bar - this is a less risky option for you in terms of your budget but a more risky option for the bar company! Some bar hire companies go so far as to say they will not provide a cash bar service because of this. It’s a lot of effort to do well, and make sure that all variables are provided (all stock…cocktails, draft beer etc… ice, glassware…and so on). So it’s worth asking your bar provider how they ensure a really good service with a bar that will not run dry half way through the evening. It’s also worth asking how much is charged per drink and request a sample menu so you have something on record. We charge £3 per pint, spirit and mixer, glass of wine adn £1 per soft drink, bottle of water. Cocktails are more expensive at £4.50 each. For this reason, whilst cocktails simply fly out on a free bar, they do not tend to be as popular on cash bars!
How we do it - we generally use a returnable deposit system. We take a desposit that is returnable £1 for £1 after the bar takes a certain amount of revenue. This means you get a great service and the potential to get at least some of your money back as long as your guests are thirsty enough. Top Tip - don’t give away free alcohol unless you are using a card system (see below)
We have had a number of clients recently, who have wanted the best of both worlds - so we created a funky card that can be sent out with invites or at the entrance so that you effectively buy each guest a drink (one card redeemed at the bar ‘buys’ one drink). This means that, if you have paid a deposit, you are more likely to reach your bar revenue threshold whilst being remembered for your generosity! Win-win I think they call that!
